Reshiram in depth
A dragon made of light and fire
The design blends a European dragon with features of birds, canids and prehistoric flying creatures. Its mane looks like smoke or white fire, while its tail embodies the Pokémon’s mechanical concept: its inspiration includes an electric turbine, although visually it looks more like a torch. The contrast with Zekrom is deliberate. Reshiram is drawn as light and airborne, in contrast to its counterpart’s heavy, technological appearance.
Its Japanese name, レシラム (Reshiram), contains a reference to 白, “white”, and the sound “Re” was chosen because it is softer than Zekrom’s “Ze”. The opposition is not limited to color. In the myth of Unova, Reshiram represents yang and truth; Zekrom represents yin and ideals; Kyurem is associated with the absence of both principles.
From the legend of Unova to Paldea
It debuted in Generation V as one of the central figures in Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. In Unova’s myths, the original dragon split apart when two brothers confronted each other over their ideas about the world. Reshiram joined the brother who defended truth, and its conflict with Zekrom left the region devastated before both disappeared.
As the generations passed, it kept its type combination, its Turboblaze Ability and its total of 680. Its availability expanded with later releases, and it eventually arrived in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet from the version indicated. Its modern movepool retains characteristic attacks such as Fusion Flare and Blue Flare, while the available TMs and moves have changed between generations.
It is also linked to Kyurem’s fusions. With the right item, Kyurem can absorb Reshiram and become White Kyurem. This relationship does not change Reshiram’s evolutionary line: it remains an independent species, not an evolution or a form obtained by leveling up.
What it brings to battle
The 100/120/100/150/120/90 spread favors a special offensive style. Blue Flare is its signature attack for power, and Dragon Pulse offers a steady alternative when it is not worth risking accuracy. Flamethrower sacrifices damage for reliability and more uses during a long battle. Draco Meteor is useful for hitting targets that do not resist Dragon, but it requires planning for the following turn.
Turboblaze defines a large part of its matchups. By ignoring the opponent’s Abilities, it allows its Fire-type attacks to work against targets that try to absorb or nullify them through an Ability. It does not fix its weaknesses to Ground, Rock and Dragon, nor does it prevent damage from Stealth Rock.
In Ubers, it has a niche offensive role. It pressures several Steel-type Pokémon and makes use of its 150 Special Attack, but its 90 Speed forces it to come in with support, after something has been weakened or against a target that cannot answer it. Sunny Day strengthens its Fire-type attacks, although relying on weather adds another condition the opponent can exploit.
The capture of a creature with no offspring
In the adventure, Reshiram works better as a narrative reward than as an early team member. The catch rate of 3 makes preparation more important than raw power: lowering its HP carefully, inflicting a status condition and bringing enough Poké Balls prevents losing the encounter by repeatedly using attacks that are too strong.
The 120 Egg cycles and the Undiscovered Egg Group are not secondary details: they confirm that there is no breeding route for obtaining additional copies. Its presence depends on special encounters, transfers or specific distributions in each game. Even when obtained, the lack of evolution and permanent forms keeps its identity tied to the original legend.
