Zekrom in depth
A turbine at the center of its body
The tail is the piece that organizes the entire design. It does not look like decoration, but like a machine capable of starting up and turning movement into electricity. The dragon and theropod dinosaur body provide weight and strength, while the crest on its head recalls a storm cloud. The result contrasts with the lighter silhouette of Reshiram: one is built around darkness, mass, and thunder; the other around light and fire.
Its Japanese name is written ゼクロム and remains Zekrom in English and Spanish. The “kuro” part comes from the Japanese 黒, “black.” Ken Sugimori explained that “Ze” was chosen for its harder, stronger sound compared with Reshiram’s “Re.” The “Deep Black Pokémon” category fits that choice and its link with yin.
The dragon of ideals
Unova’s story presents Zekrom as one half of a dragon that split when two brothers stopped sharing the same vision of the world. Its side became associated with ideals, not evil. That distinction matters: Pokédex entries speak of justice, but also of punishment. Its lightning is not a neutral tool; it responds to how people act and can devastate an entire country if they lose their way.
Together with Reshiram and Kyurem, it forms the region’s legendary core. Zekrom and Reshiram represent opposing extremes, while Kyurem occupies the space left by the original dragon. That is why their appearances and designs work better as parts of the same legend than as isolated species.
From electric wall to Ubers attacker
Since its debut in Generation V, its 150 Attack and Dragon/Electric combination have given it a clear role: switch in against Water- or Flying-type threats and force a response. Bolt Strike maintains that identity, while Dragon Dance lets it go from breaking teams to sweeping them. Teravolt adds value against Abilities that try to reduce or nullify its attacks.
The arrival of the Fairy type changed its matchups. It is no longer enough to click a Dragon-type attack to pressure any target, and teams also need to cover Fairy- and Ground-type answers. In later generations, Scale Shot has added a way to gain Speed while attacking, and Tera Blast lets it adapt its damage or defensive typing according to the chosen Tera Type.
In Ubers, it works best with support to bring it in healthy and with its answers weakened. Dragon Dance, Bolt Strike, Dragon Claw or Scale Shot, and Protect or Substitute form a recognizable core. Substitute punishes passive switches and prevents certain status conditions; Protect is useful for scouting the opponent’s move. Ground-, Ice-, and Fairy-type attacks are the direct way to pressure it, while a Pokémon that resists Electric and does not fear Dragon-type attacks can halt its momentum.
How to use it outside the tournament
In a normal playthrough, it does not need such precise preparation. Its defensive stats, access to Dragon Claw, and the power of Thunderbolt, Thunder, and Bolt Strike are enough to handle many battles against Water- or Flying-type opponents. It is best saved for when the opponent has already revealed its Ground- or Fairy-type answers; if it comes in too early, its weaknesses and 90 Speed make it lose part of its advantage.
Its original design was once considered with four arms, an idea discarded before the final version. The tail, by contrast, kept its central role as an engine and generator, which is what ultimately defines its silhouette even when it is standing still.
