Lokix in depth
Legs that fold like a razor
Lokix’s visual basis is a grasshopper, especially in its stance and in the third pair of legs that it keeps folded over its back. The reference goes beyond the insect: its folded limbs resemble a Spanish navaja, while its kicks and upright stance bring the design closer to martial arts. The masked-hero inspiration can also be seen in the facial mask, the belt and Showdown Mode. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, there are even motorcycle helmets with an appearance inspired by its head.
The English name, Lokix, combines the idea of a locust or grasshopper with kicks. The Japanese Exleg expresses it more directly through «extreme» and «leg». The X on its belt reinforces that bodily reading and ties in with the species name.
An evolution that changes the game plan
Nymble starts out as a small Bug-type insect. Upon evolving at level 24, Lokix gains the Dark type and becomes a physical attacker with access to priority moves and a very useful pivoting tool. The change is not just a matter of higher numbers: it also alters its safe switch-ins. Its immunity to Psychic and resistances to Ghost, Grass, Ground and Dark let it come in against certain attacks, but its weaknesses to Flying, Fire, Rock and Fairy mean that you have to choose the right moment.
The species debuted in the ninth generation and has no earlier history to compare it with. Its Pokédex entries focus on the physical cost of Showdown Mode: when it fights without holding anything back, it gains an immediate advantage, but its own body limits how long it can maintain it.
How to make the most of a first strike
In battle, the clearest pattern is to come in with help from a safe switch, use First Impression to apply pressure and leave with U-turn when an unfavourable response appears. Sucker Punch adds priority, although it fails if the opponent is not going to attack. Knock Off is useful against Pokémon that depend on their held items and also improves later exchanges.
Tinted Lens rewards aggressive coverage: a move that would normally do little damage can still maintain useful pressure when the target resists it. Even so, it does not fix Lokix’s defensive shortcomings. Its Special Attack of 52 rules out mixed sets as a primary option, and its Special Defense of 55 makes it dangerous to leave it in against special attackers. Protect, Substitute and Agility are among its TM options, but every slot they occupy reduces the number of attacks available.
Against other insects in Paldea
Compared with Spidops, Lokix gives up defensive utility and field control for a much greater offensive threat. Its Attack of 102 and Speed of 92 put it in a different kind of role: it is not trying to trap the opponent with webs, but to force quick decisions. Against Scyther, it shares the pressure of Bug-type attacks and the importance of coming in with a clear field, but Lokix adds the Dark type and has access to Sucker Punch.
In a normal playthrough, its best moments come after weakening opponents that resist Bug or Dark. It also works well against teams that rely on Psychic, Ghost or Grass, as long as there are no Flying-, Fire-, Rock- or Fairy-type attacks waiting for the switch. Its Showdown Mode represents that same logic: concentrated power for a short time, followed by a body that cannot keep it up.
