About Noibat

As the Sound Wave Pokémon, Noibat bases its life on hearing: it lives in dark caves and emits ultrasonic waves of 200 000 Hz with its enormous ears. It comes out at nightfall to look for ripe fruit, which it can distinguish from unripe fruit by sound. When a piece does not meet its standards, it discards it.

Its appearance combines a small bat with features of a winged dragon. Its ears dominate its silhouette and are also its main tool for navigating, detecting food and attacking. Its waves are so intense that even the toughest fighters become dizzy when hit by them.

It occupies the first place in a two-species evolutionary line. At level 48 it evolves into Noivern, which retains the Flying and Dragon types and takes its sound specialisation much further.

Noibat in depth

Bat ears and wyvern wings

The design starts from a bat, with features taken from both fruit bats and insect-eating bats. The shape of its ears also calls to mind speakers, a direct visual reference to its Sound Wave Pokémon category. The wings, fangs and more angular silhouette add a wyvern interpretation that sets up its evolution into Noivern.

The English name combines «noise» and «bat». The Japanese name, オンバット, is based on «on», sound, and «onpa», sound wave, together with «bat». It is not a bat that uses sound as a merely decorative trait: it uses it to locate ripe fruit, navigate in darkness and make its opponents dizzy.

An echo of Zubat with a different role

The most immediate comparison is Zubat. Both are Flying-type bats, share the purple colour, Infiltrator and a contribution from Speed, and have an evolutionary line that begins with a small cave-dwelling creature. The difference lies in their focus. Zubat relies more on wearing opponents down and on its status options, while Noibat looks towards special damage and adds the Dragon type from its first stage.

That secondary type gives it better switch-ins against Grass, Fire and Water, but also adds significant weaknesses. Noibat resists several common attacks in Little Cup, although its HP, Defense and Special Defense are not high enough to turn those resistances into strong defensive capability.

What it found in Little Cup

During the XY era, competitive proposals for Noibat focused on taking advantage of its Speed and its Flying- and Dragon-type special attacks. Its role was that of a fragile attacker and scout: it came in after a teammate had gone down or against an attack it resisted, applied pressure with Hurricane or Dragon Pulse and left with U-turn.

Infiltrator was the most useful offensive Ability because it removed the protection provided by Substitute and screens. Frisk offered a more informative alternative: knowing the opposing Pokémon's held item could reveal whether the opponent relied on a Focus Sash, a Berry or a Choice item. Telepathy was reserved for Double Battles, where it protected Noibat from attacks aimed at the whole field by its allies.

How to use it during the adventure

In a normal playthrough, it works best as a fast special attacker rather than a bulky Pokémon. Dragon Pulse is a reliable option against targets weak to the Dragon type; Air Slash provides a Flying-type special attack with less risk than Hurricane, and Tailwind lets it support the team when direct damage is not enough. U-turn helps maintain the battle's momentum and fits with Frisk, since it lets Noibat inspect the opponent and then retreat.

It is best not to leave it in against Rock or Ice attacks, or powerful coverage moves. It also does not make good use of physical attacks: its Attack is 30, while its Special Attack reaches 45. The line improves dramatically upon reaching Noivern, but until then its value lies in moving before the opponent, switching into specific resistances and getting out before taking a direct hit.
