Okidogi in depth
The chain as a leash and a symbol
Okidogi’s design is based on a large dog, with features that recall the Japanese Akita and, to a lesser extent, the Shiba Inu. The chain around its neck looks like a leash, but it also brings to mind the ritual shimenawa cords of Shinto tradition. In its case, the image does not suggest obedience: the chain is the element that awakens and strengthens its muscles. That contradiction fits its story, because Kitakami’s supposed protector acts like a thug.
Its English name combines “okie-dokie” and “dog”. The Japanese イイネイヌ, Iineinu, ends in inu, “dog”, and preserves the idea of approval from ii ne, “how nice”. The reference to the dogi of martial arts also fits its Fighting type and the close-fitting clothing that seems to form part of its silhouette.
The muscle of the Loyal Three
Okidogi represents strength within the trio formed by Ogerpon, Munkidori and Fezandipiti. Its relationship with Ogerpon recalls the Japanese tale of Momotarō: a dog, a monkey and a pheasant accompany the protagonist on his journey. In Pokémon, that inspiration is twisted. The Loyal Three were revered as Kitakami’s saviours, but the real story presents them as thieves who stole Ogerpon’s masks.
Okidogi’s role has not changed between generations because it debuted directly in the ninth, within The Teal Mask. Its playable story revolves around the trio’s resurrection, the boost in power caused by the mochi and the confrontation with the player. It has no pre-evolution, evolution or alternate form that changes its narrative role.
Lots of power, little speed
In battle, its 128 Attack and 115 Defense explain how it works better than any label. It comes in, takes a reasonable physical hit and threatens with Gunk Shot, Close Combat or Knock Off. Bulk Up turns that resilience into steadily increasing pressure, and Drain Punch lets it recover HP while keeping Fighting as a source of damage.
Toxic Chain rewards turns in which it attacks repeatedly, even if the opponent resists the hit. Guard Dog shifts the focus: it is useful against teams that try to lower its Attack with Intimidate or force it out with switching moves. Neither ability solves its Speed problem, fixed at 80, or its vulnerability to Psychic, Flying and Ground.
How to cover its switch-ins
Okidogi works best when it does not have to take powerful special attacks continuously. A partner that checks Psychic attackers and Ground Pokémon gives it turns to use Bulk Up. It also appreciates the team removing entry hazards, since it needs to come in several times to wear opponents down with Knock Off and Toxic Chain.
Drain Punch is the reliable option for long games; Close Combat is useful when something needs to be taken down immediately; and Knock Off punishes switches and leaves defensive opponents without their items. Ice Fang adds coverage against Ground and Flying targets, although it gives up a utility move. Its Special Attack of 58 rules out any serious mixed plan, so Hyper Beam and Focus Blast are relegated to anecdotal uses. The chain is not decoration: it concentrates the identity of the design, the story of Kitakami and the way it gains ground in battle.
