Munkidori in depth
One name, two monkeys
The Japanese name, Mashimashira (マシマシラ), combines “mashi”, related to improving or increasing, and “mashira”, an old word for referring to a monkey or ape. The English name Munkidori combines “monkey” with “hunky-dory”, an expression meaning that everything is going well. The Spanish translation keeps that international form instead of adapting the wordplay.
The choice fits Kitakami’s story. Munkidori does not start out with extraordinary intelligence: it seeks it. The Toxic Chain grants it the knowledge it wanted, but also ties it to selfish and manipulative behaviour. Its Psychic typing does not only describe mental attacks; it also reflects that acquired intelligence and its role as the brains of the Loyal Three.
The monkey of legend
The design brings together several references. The body resembles a small primate, and the hunched posture reinforces its appearance as a cunning creature. The upper hair looks like a traditional Japanese topknot, while the feet evoke sandals. The chain on its forehead resembles a ritual ribbon or band, a detail that connects its appearance with Kitakami’s imagery.
The Loyal Three are connected to the legend of Momotarō: a monkey, a dog, and a pheasant accompany the hero in the traditional story. Here, the relationship is twisted. Ogerpon takes the place of the figure pursued by the supposed heroes, while the trio acts as a gang of minions under Pecharunt’s control. Munkidori represents the group’s intellect, compared with Okidogi’s strength and Fezandipiti’s beauty.
An attacker that needs a clean entry
In a normal battle, it works best when it comes in against a move it resists, forces a switch, and uses that turn to attack or set up Nasty Plot. Psychic is its most reliable special move against Poison and Fighting types; Sludge Wave pressures Fairy and Grass types; U-turn keeps up momentum and creates new opportunities for Toxic Chain to wear down the opponent.
It should not be left in against physical attackers. Its 66 Defense is a real limitation, and its weaknesses to Ground, Ghost, and Dark force you to plan switches carefully. Steel Pokémon are also unconcerned by poisoning and force it to use Focus Blast, Shadow Ball, or support from its teammates. Nasty Plot gives it more power to break teams, but it needs to find a safe turn and cannot afford to rack up unnecessary damage.
A species with no playable past
Munkidori debuted directly in Generation IX, so it does not carry over changes from previous generations. Its learnset belongs to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and reflects the same idea as its story: it starts with basic moves such as Scratch and Confusion, learns Helping Hand early, and reaches Nasty Plot at Lv.56 before obtaining Future Sight at Lv.64.
Its level-up learnset also follows a striking pattern: after the initial moves, its learning levels advance at regular intervals of eight. It does not evolve, has no alternate forms, and its role within the Loyal Three is established from its first appearance in Kitakami.
