Sneasel in depth
A sickle with fur
The design mixes weasel and cat, but the underlying reference is the kamaitachi, the Japanese yōkai shaped like a weasel with sickle-like claws that attacks mountain travelers for no apparent reason. Almost everything the Pokédex says about its character comes from there, including the insistence that it is cunning and fierce rather than simply hungry.
The Japanese name, ニューラ (Nyula), allows two readings: 潜入 (sennyū, sneaking in) with 鼬 (itachi, weasel), or ニャー (nya, a cat's meow) with 野良 (nora, stray). English builds sneak onto weasel, with snow hovering nearby. French, Farfuret, is the most rounded of the three: farfadet, the mischievous little goblin from French tradition, plus furet, ferret.
Seven years in a dead end
It came out in the second generation and stayed there. Throughout Gold, Silver, Crystal and the entire third generation, it did not evolve into anything: a single-stage Pokémon with 430 points, fast, frail and with no promise of getting better. Weavile did not appear until Diamond and Pearl, along with the Razor Claw, the item needed to unlock it. It is one of the clearest cases of Game Freak going back to repair a design that had aged badly.
Its numbers, on the other hand, have not been touched since 1999: same types, same total, same distribution. The only thing it has gained along the way is Pickpocket as a Hidden Ability.
What it learns and when
The level-up list is one of those that forces you to rely on TMs from the start. Scratch and Leer at 1, Taunt at 6, Quick Attack at 12, Metal Claw at 18. Its first Ice-type move comes at 24 and is Icy Wind, special, with 55 power against 35 Special Attack: not worth the slot even with Blizzard installed. Beat Up at 42 is a curiosity that only pays off on full teams. Slash, its strongest Normal move by level at 70 power, appears at 60, long after any normal playthrough has ended.
The result is that a properly built Sneasel depends almost entirely on what it is taught from outside: Foul Play and Swords Dance by machine, Icicle Crash and Ice Shard through breeding. What it brings by default is Speed and a pair of claws.
The other Sneasel
In Legends: Arceus, the Hisuian variant appeared, Fighting- and Poison-type instead of Dark- and Ice-type, with its claws redesigned as climbing hooks. It evolves with the same Razor Claw but during the day, and what comes out is Sneasler, a Fighting- and Poison-type Pokémon that also serves as a mount for climbing walls in that game. The official description portrays it as considerably less resentful than the Johto one and attributes that to its environment.
Two forms of the same species, the same evolution item, and the only operational difference between ending up with one or the other is whether the clock says day or night.
