Suicune in depth
Suiko, the water tiger
The Japanese name, スイクン, is pronounced the same in every language: it's one of the few Pokémon from Generation II that wasn't translated. It breaks down into 水 (sui, water) and 君 (kun, lord), “lord of water”, and it is also often linked to the suiko, a water tiger from Japanese and Chinese folklore that can breathe underwater and turn invisible. Some people also add the Finnish suihku, “shower”, though that clue is weaker.
The design can't decide between dog and cat, and that is exactly the problem that has kept the discussion going for twenty-five years. The trio mixes the Japanese raijū with Chinese guardian lions and textbook big cats—tiger, lion, cheetah—and Suicune adds the aurora-borealis mane and the air of an animal that runs for the sheer pleasure of it. The 187 kilos spread over two metres describe a slender body, not a bulky one.
One move every six levels
Its level-up table advances with clockwork regularity: level 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and so on up to 78, without exceptions. The problem is what's in each slot. It starts with Water Gun (40 power), moves on to Water Pulse (60) at level 6 and doesn't improve its Water offence again until Surf at level 54. Forty-eight levels with 60 power as its ceiling.
In the meantime, it gets things it can't make use of. Bite at 12 and Crunch at 42 are physical, and its Attack is 75. Ice Fang, at 30, has the same problem. Mirror Coat, at 60, returns twice the special damage received and fits its 115 Special Defense, but it requires guessing the turn. Gust and Tailwind are the only nods to Flying typing in that north-wind story, and neither of them does anything for it.
Its TM movepool makes up for part of the disaster: Ice Beam, Shadow Ball, Iron Head, Chilling Water, Tera Blast. With Calm Mind and Rest also on the list, the set of moves actually worth using fits into four slots, and none of them depends on reaching level 78.
The distribution it got
The three Johto legendaries add up to exactly 580 points, and each puts 115 of them into two stats. Raikou chose Special Attack and Speed; Entei, Attack and HP; Suicune got both defenses. It's the least flashy distribution of the three and the only one that produces a Pokémon capable of lasting twenty turns, which in a real battle is worth more than a power spike.
Crystal put it on the cover and built an entire subplot around it: the Clear Bell, the chase through Johto, Eusine. Of the three, it's the only one the game stops treating like a fleeing hare and places still in front of the player. Compared with a classic Water wall like Vaporeon, which puts 130 HP together with poor physical Defense, Suicune is the opposite: less HP, much more consistency on both sides and an ability that does nothing for it.
One detail from the data: it gives 261 base experience when it goes down, and its starting friendship is 35, the value for a Pokémon that takes a while to warm to you. Purifying springs doesn't make it sociable.
