About Weezing

Magneton are three Magnemite stuck together and Dugtrio are three Diglett poking out of the same hole; here, two Koffing have fused into one. The Pokédex treats it as an anomaly rather than normal growth: on rare occasions, a mutation occurs and two small balloons end up joined together. It isn't a body that matures; it's a body that duplicates.

The two spheres are tied together by a tube and work in shifts. When one inflates, the other deflates, and that back-and-forth motion mixes the gases each head stores separately. The more it mixes them, the more toxic and rotten the whole thing becomes. The large head has pronounced eyebrows and fangs jutting from its lower jaw; the small one barely has a face.

It eats garbage, and that's not a metaphor: germs, dust, and the gases released by whatever gets left lying around in a kitchen. It looks for dirty, neglected houses to settle in, then waits for the owners to fall asleep before heading down to the trash can. Its official habitat is urban, something almost no Pokémon from the first generation can claim.

It is 1.2 meters tall and weighs 9.5 kilograms. Two balls that size weighing less than a small dog, because there's nothing inside but gas. It closes out the Koffing line, which stays at two stages.

Weezing in depth

Dogasu, again

Koffing's Japanese name is ドガース, Dogāsu. Weezing's is マタドガス, Matadogasu, which adds 又 (mata), “again”. The name literally says “Dogasu again”, which is exactly what you see: the same ball, repeated. A second reading has circulated for years and fits just as well — マスタードガス, masutādogasu, means “mustard gas”, and the name distorts it by changing barely a single syllable. Both things fit into the same five katakana, and considering the rest of the first generation's Pokédex, it is hard to believe that is accidental.

English falls short by comparison. Weezing comes from wheezing, the whistling sound made by someone breathing with difficulty, and describes the noise but not the double body. The French Smogogo is based on smog and repeats the final syllable to show that there are two heads.

The Pokémon of dirty cities

Kanto has three creatures made from waste, and each takes a different form of the same idea. Muk is liquid waste, the stain crawling across the ground. Weezing is the part that evaporates. Years later, Garbodor completed the set with the container, the standing garbage bag.

Of the three, this is the one with the most specific behavior in its Pokédex entries. It does not live in some abstract landfill: it lives in a house, in a kitchen, and comes out at night while the inhabitants sleep. That uncomfortable domesticity is what sets it apart from the rest. The urban habitat in its entry is not filler.

Galar's chimney

The Galarian form changes enough to be a different animal. Its body turns gray, its skin is covered in a pipe-like texture, and a hat-shaped pipe appears on top of each head, expelling air that has already been cleaned, while five green clouds surround its outline. The official explanation is environmental: it appeared during an era when factories filled the air with pollution, and the creature adapted to eat it.

The change brings the Fairy type alongside Poison, a rare and defensively strong combination. In the ninth generation, its Hidden Ability became the one that creates Misty Terrain when it enters the field. The Kantonian version, meanwhile, carries a line in Sword and Shield that sounds like a historical footnote: apparently, in the past, specimens could be found all over Galar.

Abilities that arrived twenty years late

In Red and Blue, it had no ability, because abilities did not exist. Levitate was given to it in the third generation and fixed half its type chart in one stroke, leaving it with Psychic as its only weakness. It stayed that way for five generations.

Neutralizing Gas arrived in the eighth and is the most interesting thing that has ever happened to it. Shutting off every opposing ability while it is on the field is an effect it shares with almost nobody: only with Koffing. Stench, its Hidden Ability, is the opposite — a 10% chance to make the opponent flinch that almost never decides a battle.

As for moves, the list has a couple of oddities. Heat Wave as a level-1 move on a pure Poison type with no connection to fire. Belch at 44, with 120 power, which requires having eaten a Berry beforehand to use. And Self-Destruct at 28 before Explosion at 50, in case the 200-power suicide came too late.
