Slowbro in depth
Yadoran, the one that doesn't lodge
The Japanese name, ヤドラン, plays on 宿 (yado, lodging) and allows several readings at once: 宿らん, not lodging, but also 宿借り (yadokari, hermit crab) and 宿主 (yadonushi, the host that houses a parasite). All three describe the same scene from different angles, depending on who you decide is in charge of the tail. English is much flatter: slow plus bro, short for brother, pointing to the coexistence of the two animals. In Spanish, the English name was left untouched.
The design mixes several things together. Its base is the same as Slowpoke's — giant salamander, hippopotamus, giant otter — and what gets added on top is the hermit crab's way of life. Bulbapedia also points to the sazae-oni, a sea demon from Japanese folklore that lives in a sea-snail shell covered in spikes, which is more or less what hangs from its tail.
Shellder, incidentally, gets the worse end of the deal. The same species that turns into Cloyster with a Water Stone ends up biting a tail for the rest of its life here, and in the official artwork it doesn't even keep the shape it has on its own: its body stretches into a spiral and loses the spikes.
Amnesia in Red and Blue
In the first generation, Special Attack and Special Defense didn't exist as separate stats: there was a single Special stat, and Amnesia boosted it sharply in one go. With that mechanic, Slowbro could take anything on the special side while its 110 Defense already covered the physical side, and Surf did the rest without needing much else. That set, with Rest for healing once it was set up, is one of the best-known in the game's competitive history, and Smogon still places Slowbro in Red and Blue OU.
All of that broke in the second generation. Once Special was split in two, its 100 Special Attack was separated from its roughly 80 Special Defense, and Amnesia only boosted Special Defense. What had been a complete plan became half a strategy. Its continued usefulness today has nothing to do with any of that, but with Regenerator, an Ability that arrived three generations later.
Three bodies for the same Slowpoke
Slowbro has two alternate forms, and neither looks anything like the other. The Mega Evolution from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire reverses the scene: Shellder swallows it whole and Slowbro ends up inside the shell, propped up on its tail, with Shell Armor as its Ability — nullifying critical hits and fitting neatly with its boosted Defense.
The Galarian one, from the Isle of Armor, changes its types to Poison and Psychic, moves Shellder onto its arm and uses it as a cannon. Its Ability, Quick Draw, sometimes lets it move first when it attacks; it's the only species with it, and it's designed precisely to cover the usual problem, that 30 Speed. To obtain it, you have to use a Galarica Cuff on a Slowpoke, not a Slowbro.
Of the three, the original does the least and gets used the most: the other two depend on a Mega Stone removed from the current games or on an item from a specific expansion.
